I think that every student here on this forum has successfully understood that all teachers have a responsibility to develop a child's literacy and I hope my contribution was also effective.

Wow, very interesting comments from the other participants. I hope that we all keep up the high levele of critical thinking that we have displayed.
Yes, I think that all teachers have a very signicant role to play in a child uderstanding and holistical development in literacy. Simply because the students need all the scaffolding that they need in order for them to become independent and lifelong learners. Teachers should never assume that the students know all the strategies that they need to excel.
They should ensure that they incorparate and integrate the language arts and technology together with the content to help the students understand the content in the respective subject area.

I would agree with all the comments made by my classmates. i think that all teachers can play a role as content area teachers. The question is, do they practice that role? Like Blanch and tasha said some teachers believe they are not responsible for teaching students to read but they are responsible to teach the content of the subject they are assigned to teach. Why do teachers have that view? i would say that is boils down to the ministry officials because they are ones who are pushing for the students to learn for exams purposes and so that the syllabus is completed. Therefore the subject teachers focus on their subject and not on teaching the students to read since they expect the students to learn to read in the lower grades. But if all teachers take some time out to help the students in content area reading then what the students miss out on in one class they can always get it and they will not be left behind when it comes to reading content area texts.

Every teacher should be a teacher of literacy.Since literacy is no longer viewed as the ablity to read and write, but that it always exist in a context, every teacher is a teacher of literacy. During classroom session, teachers interact with their students, helping them to express themselves in a variety of ways(poems, roleplaying, dramatization),they read, they write they express ideas and opinions and all in all learn to cope with their environment in a meaningful way.

I firmly believe that every teacher is responsible for teaching their students how to read irrespective of what subject they teach. If students do not know how to read this would interfare with them comprehending the concepts that they are taught. However because we follow curriculums teaching students to read ay not always be possible

i believe that Every teacher needs to consider him/herself a literacy teacher because all teachers at every grade level and in every discipline – must learn literacy strategies to integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing into the subjects they teach. When literacy strategies are taught they are rarely taught in a consistent manner across grades and disciplines. Most teachers believe it is the responsibility of the English/Language Arts teachers to teach literacy even though every student needs literacy skills to succeed in every class and on every test. Even when teachers do focus on literacy, they often teach reading and writing and neglect speaking and listening: two vital aspects of literacy. In order for students to become successful, independent and active readers and writers all six language arts elements must be incorporated in all subject areas.

I totally agree with sachipooks because if each teacher left out reading and writing as well as the other language arts strands the students in each grade would lack skills in using strategies
to learn across the content areas. Also the students would not be able to refer to the
language used in the various text. Therefore, I believe that every teacher is a teacber of literacy

every teacher should be a teacher of literacy but some are not. They have left the task up to the language teachers to do the job. Blanc h is quiet right when she states it makes no sense for teachers to waste valuable instructional time teaching content, when the students are unable to write sentences or comprehend what they are reading

This class I believe is very important because before I would think that my job is to teach whatever students need to know about the subject area, however it s not so. How would children learn anything if they could not read and understand their text? How would students learn if they did not understand the vocabulary or identify specific features and structures of text.Teachers are responsible for ensuring that students read, understand and know the important things that they should identify when reading. I believe that every teacher should be a teacher of literacy
